Shooting Ranges

BLM offers a number of target shooting ranges for public use on BLM-managed lands. 

The EXPLORE Act defines a target shooting range as a developed and managed area authorized or operated by the BLM or its lessee, specifically for the purposeful discharge by the public of legal firearms, firearms training, archery, or other associated activities. This definition includes shooting ranges managed by the U.S. Forest Service and transferred or leased under the Recreation and Public Purposes Act.  

 A qualifying range must include opportunities for rifles and pistols, include safety features like berms and buffer distances, and have a designated firing line. It may also provide opportunities for archery, skeet, trap, or sporting clays (shotgun sports), along with amenities such as shade structures, trash containers, restrooms, and benches.  

BLM has identified 93 qualifying ranges, with 76% of BLM Districts Offices (38 out of 50) having at least one qualifying range. While 12 districts lack a qualifying range, no districts are restricted in their resource management plan from constructing or transferring land for a range. BLM is evaluating needs locally and prioritizing them nationally. BLM is also considering locations where additional ranges are needed to better serve the American public and to provide for safe and fun recreational target shooting opportunities. Initial BLM assessments, along with outreach to Western Governors’ Offices and state fish and game agencies, have identified 36 additional ranges under consideration.

3. Pan and zoom the map to find a shooting range.

List of Qualifying Shooting Ranges by BLM Office

Consistent with Section 123 of the EXPLORE Act, the list and map of qualifying ranges include target shooting ranges on land transferred or leased pursuant to the Act commonly known as the “Recreation and Public Purposes Act,” as long as the range meets the requirements in Section 123.

There are currently: 

• 12 BLM managed shooting ranges
• 35 leased ranges managed by partners on BLM public lands 
• 46 partner owned and managed ranges on former BLM public lands
