Kanab Field Office
Located near the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, the Kanab Field Office encompasses more than half-a-million acres of stunning canyon country in southwest Utah. Sage brush, grassland, and pinyon-juniper ecosystems intermingle with scattered pockets of ponderosa pine trees. The area is home to a diverse array of species of desert wildlife, including mule deer, big horn sheep, reptiles such as the Great Basin rattlesnake and Great Basin collared lizard, and a variety of birdlife, including the threatened Mexican spotted owl and the endangered California condor.
The Kanab Field Office provides recreational opportunities for off-highway vehicle exploration, mountain biking, backpacking, hiking, horse-back riding, and wildlife viewing. Lands managed by the Kanab Field Office also contain historical and archaeological resources, highlighting the importance of the region to early Americans and settlers. Today, Kanab is a major tourist destination, attracting 2-3 million visitors each year — a testament to its surrounding natural environment and proximity to five national parks.
Through multiple-use management, the BLM balances public visitation with resource protection mandates and permitted commercial activities, such as livestock grazing, mining, and the provision of adventure guide services. Tourism is typically highest in the spring and fall seasons, due to more favorable weather conditions in the high desert environment. Please do your part to help protect what makes this area special by being respectful of other visitors and minimizing your impact on sensitive resources through responsible recreation, as well as adhering to all posted rules and regulations so these beautiful lands are available for generations to come.
