CRAIG, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hiring at least 100 paid student interns across the country, some of them right here in Colorado. This is a great opportunity for motivated individuals seeking a rewarding career in civil service. Applications are open on usajobs.gov through Dec. 18, 2023.
Student trainee internships are announced for locations including Craig, Grand Junction, Lakewood and Pueblo. The BLM internships in Colorado will provide experience and training in programs including natural resources, outdoor recreation, land surveying, geographic information systems and realty.
The Little Snake Field Office in Craig has been fortunate to have current intern, Mark Kohn, working in the outdoor recreation program.
“I have learned a lot about our public lands and have enjoyed collaborating with resource specialists and the public,” said Kohn. “It’s been a great public service experience, especially when learning from experienced staff, helping complete projects and assisting the public.”
Kohn’s supervisor, Outdoor Recreation Planner, Whit Patterson, started his BLM career as an intern.
“I was able to build on a background of earth science and trail crew leadership through an internship with the BLM in the Taos Field Office as a Recreation Tech, where I found my passion for public lands working with the BLM,” said Patterson. “This opportunity led me down a career path with the BLM as an Outdoor Recreation Planner in New Mexico and Colorado and I will soon be the Recreation Program Manager for the BLM Montana/Dakotas State Office.”
The opportunities are out there to find your own adventure in a career working in public lands. Internships are available in a variety of career fields across the country including civil engineering, wildland fire, information technology and various programs supporting the management of public lands. Students will get the most out of the workshop if they already have an account on usajobs.gov. Anyone 16 years or older and enrolled or soon to be enrolled in school is eligible to apply.
