BLM Colorado State Director

As BLM Colorado State Director, Doug Vilsack is responsible for overseeing the management of 8.3 million acres of public lands ranging from alpine tundra to colorful canyons to sagebrush steppe to mountains rising more than 14,000 feet above sea level, as well as more than 27 million acres of Federal sub-surface mineral estate. Prior to coming to BLM in 2022, Vilsack was the Assistant Director for Parks, Wildlife and Lands for the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR), where he would recommend, develop, negotiate, and communicate policy positions that impacted natural resources in the state. Prior to becoming Assistant Director, he served as Director of Legislative Affairs at Colorado DNR and the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Before starting work for the state in 2016, Vilsack also founded and led several non-profit organizations, including the Posner Center for International Development, a network of Colorado-based businesses and organizations addressing global poverty, and worked to establish distribution networks for household solar products on the Navajo Nation and in rural Africa. Vilsack has also practiced as an attorney handling water, energy, mining, and public lands cases.
