Purpose of Gather:Wild Horse and Burro Logo

The bait trap gather is necessary to achieve a natural ecological balance and maintain multiple use relationships, which include the horses on the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range.

Details of Gather:

On August 5, BLM began bait-trap gather operations to gather up to 50 wild horses and removed 18 wild horses from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range.

Summary: 10 horses captured at Krueger Pond bait trap. Four of them were removed from the HMA and transported to Britton Springs Corral.

Summary: Did not trap today. BLM employees spent the day with veterinarian preparing the horses at Britton Springs Corral for adoption; freeze branding, vaccinating, worming and gelding (if applicable).

Summary: Trapping operations shut down on Monday by weather event.  Operations will resume on Tuesday.

Summary: One mare and foal captured at Layout Creek Trap Site. They were removed from the HMA and transported to Britton Springs Corral.

A death labeled as "acute" is when an animal dies or is euthanized due to acute injuries or medical conditions brought about by the gather and removal process including those that occur during capture, sorting and holding at the gather site. This term will include animals that die for known or unknown reasons thought to be related to gather activities. 

A death labeled as "chronic/pre-existing" is when an animal dies or is euthanized for reasons related to chronic or pre-existing conditions such as body condition, lameness, serious physical defects, etc. This term will include animals that are euthanized for conditions not brought about by the gather activity.

Adoption Information

Wild horses not returned to the range were sent to the Britton Springs Off-Range Corral to be entered into BLM’s Adoption Program.
