Public Input & Actions

BLM publishes proposed and final rules in the Federal Register and carries out environmental reviews in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Announcing and explaining bureau plans and proposals and providing the public an opportunity to comment on proposed actions is an important part of informed management. We encourage citizens to make their voices heard on the issues that are important to them.

The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on proposed management updates for oil and gas leasing and development on public lands in Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties, and portions of Fresno, Merced, and San Joaquin counties.

The BLM plans public safety measures for 2026 King of the Hammers race

The Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close public lands in the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area in San Bernardino County from Jan. 29–Feb. 7, 2026, during the annual King of the Hammers desert race event. The race is authorized by a BLM Special Recreation Permit, and the temporary closure is necessary for public safety and to provide an enhanced recreation experience for event participants and spectators.

BLM to conduct prescribed fire at Point Arena

The Bureau of Land Management's Ukiah Field Office plans to conduct prescribed fire operations in the Point Arena-Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument in Mendocino County. Pile-burn operations could start as soon as Dec. 8 and may continue periodically through fall, winter and spring. Prescribed fire operations will take place only when weather and fuel moistures allow for safe and successful burning.

BLM issues final analysis for mineral exploration in Inyo County

The Bureau of Land Management issued the final environmental impact statement analyzing proposed exploratory drilling on approximately 13 acres of public lands south of Lone Pine in Inyo County. If approved, Mojave Precious Metals Inc. could search for mineral deposits, including gold, on public lands where they currently hold mining claims.

The BLM offers online Christmas tree cutting permits

The Bureau of Land Management is offering personal use Christmas tree cutting permits online, from now until Dec. 24. The permits allow the public to harvest up to five Christmas trees on designated BLM-managed public lands near Benton and Bridgeport in Mono County.

BLM lifts seasonal fire and target shooting restrictions in southern California

The Bureau of Land Management has lifted seasonal fire restrictions on BLM-managed public lands in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, southern Inyo, eastern Mono, San Diego, and eastern Kern counties, effective October 30.

The Bureau of Land Management plans to conduct prescribed fire operations when conditions allow this fall and winter in areas of the Keysville Recreation Area and Walker Pass Campgrounds, near Lake Isabella and Canebrake in Kern County. Prescribed burning helps to reduce hazardous fuels, moderate the potential negative effects of wildland fire, and increase firefighter and public safety. Burning may continue through mid-March depending on weather conditions. Pile-burn operations will only be conducted when weather and fuel moistures allow for safe and successful burning.
