Fort Sage HMA

The horses in this area likely originated from domestic stock from area farms and ranches.  These horses range in size from 14 to 16 hands and may weigh 900 to 1200 pounds.  This area is managed in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management’s Carson City, NV office.

Location: The Fort Sage Herd Management Area is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Susanville, CA just east of the town of Doyle, CA.

Size: 15,967 acres

Topography/Vegetation: The terrain is generally mountainous and steep. Dominant vegetation in the area consists of sagebrush, bitterbrush, needlegrass, and bluebunch wheatgrass.  Elevations in the area range from 4,000 to 8, 000 feet.

Wildlife: Major wildlife species in the area include coyote, mule deer, chukar and quail.
