Forest Resilience and Ecosystem Services

The BLM manages forests with the goal of maintaining healthy forests that provide “ecosystem services” such as clean water in rivers and streams, abundant fish and wildlife habitats, and economic opportunities from the harvest of forest products. Forests also face numerous threats such insects, diseases, climate change and destructive wildfires.  Forest health is really about forests being resilient to these threats and this is why the BLM carefully manages forests to be healthy and productive, as it works to balance the ecological, economic and social aspects of forestry.
