Red Rock Canyon to Feature Local Artist Exhibits July-August 2014

Las Vegas – Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area will display its first Artist-in-Residence program exhibition from July 4 until August 30. The show will feature new works and pieces for sale by Southern Nevada artists Linda Campbell, Maria Arango Diener and Myranda Bair who each completed a two-week residency at Red Rock Canyon this spring.
An opening reception will be held at the Red Rock Canyon visitor center on July 9, from 5–7 p.m. All are welcome to view the artwork and meet the artists, but a reminder that regular amenity/entrance fees will apply.
Linda Campbell, whose residency lasted from March 16-29, participated in four programs during her stay. Linda began by leading a sketching hike field trip with 40 middle school students. She also led two sketching hikes which had 14 participants, a majority of which were fine art students from the College of Southern Nevada. In addition, Linda gave a presentation to an existing art class of her plein-air pastel technique and French easel.
Maria Arango Diener completed her residency from April 6th through the 19th. Maria led two workshops that took 10 participants through the design and carving of a wood block print, and at least a dozen more individuals attended the workshops to meet the artist and learn about her work. Afterwards, each wooden block carved by the participants was physically incorporated into a "puzzle print" of Red Rock Canyon.
Myranda Bair was the final artist to complete a residency at Red Rock Canyon this year. During her May 4-17 residency, Myranda led a sketching hike and postcard-making workshop in the visitor center which attracted more than 90 participants.
The artist-in-residence program promotes awareness through art of the exceptional places protected within the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System. The program provides an opportunity for learning and dialogue about the value of preserving public lands.
