Event Description

CRAIG, Colo. – The Horse Draw Fire was first reported on June 26 at 1:50 p.m. and continues to burn north of U.S. Highway 40 near mile marker 20, in the Horse Draw and Three Springs areas. Currently, the fire is confined to the north side of Highway 40.

U.S. Highway 40 is open in both directions. However, motorists traveling near mile marker 20 are urged to exercise caution and be mindful of fire personnel and emergency vehicles operating in the area.

A power line in the vicinity was temporarily de-energized for safety but has since been restored.

As of 3:15 p.m. on June 27, containment on the southern side of the fire is estimated at 45%. Fire crews have constructed a handline on this section to aid containment. Aerial resources and ground crews are concentrating their efforts on the north and west flanks of the fire, which remain the most active areas. Their work has contributed to the improved containment.

Reminder help prevent wildfires and secure your trailer chains. Sparks from dragging trailer chains can ignite dry grass and start wildfires.

Prevent fires:

  • Check and secure safety chains.
  • Keep chains off the pavement.
  • Stay aware of local fire danger.

With hot, dry days ahead, a simple check can prevent disaster.
