(BUTTE, Mont.) – The Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office will temporarily close White Sandy Recreation Site on Hauser Lake for the season in order to remove a troublesome piling at the end of one of the boat docks.

Starting Sept. 30, crews plan to permanently remove the second piling in the water that attaches to the courtesy dock at the agency’s recreation site.

When it was installed at the lake near Helena in 2005, the 8,000-pound piling did not sink deep enough because the bedrock was too shallow. Since then, the piling has started to move, leaning more and more each year, making the annual installation of the courtesy dock increasingly difficult.

The field office has decided to proactively maintain the public courtesy dock system by removing the piling in order for White Sandy to re-open by May 1, 2020.
