Fuelwood permits are valid for 90 days and apply only to lands managed by the Taos Field Office. Permittees should be aware of the following changes prior to purchasing:
- Fuelwood cutting on Cerro de la Olla (Pot Mountain) is no longer permissible above 8,160 feet. Lower elevations of the mountain are still open to fuelwood cutting.
- Permits will include any species of standing dead or downed trees, and permittees may harvest any diameter tree.
Maps of open wood-cutting areas, along with all rules concerning fuelwood collection, will be available at the time of purchase. To access fuelwood area maps, please visit: https://www.blm.gov/maps/frequently-requested/new-mexico.
Penalties for cutting or removing wood from BLM lands without a valid fuelwood permit can be more than $300. Fines for cutting green trees start at $300, with a $50 fine for each additional tree. At the discretion of a BLM Law Enforcement Officer, illegally cut fuelwood and any equipment used, such as chainsaws, trailers, and even vehicles, can be confiscated from illegal woodcutters.
