COLORADO GIS AND DATA MANAGEMENT

The Bureau of Land Management Colorado data library allows users to access geospatial datasets as either a downloadable shapefile, Esri file geodatabase, kmz files and/or through Web Services. These data sets are updated as needed but typically on a quarterly basis. Users of the data should refer to the metadata should they have any specific questions. No warranty is made by the BLM for use of the data for purposes not intended by the BLM.

Please note that this list does not represent the entirety of BLM Colorado's geospatial data. More datasets will be made available for external distribution as they pass internal BLM QA/QC benchmarks.

You can also view BLM Colorado's GIS data in an interactive webmap.

Administrative Units

Cadastral

This category includes themes such as the Public Land Survey System and Plats.

BLM Colorado Public Land Survey System (PLSS)

Data Links:

BLM Colorado Plats - A Master Title Plat (MTP) is a graphic illustration of land and mineral status within a township. The base of the MTP is based on the most recent survey information. MTPs are continually updated as status or survey information changes. If there is a lot of detail within a small area, a supplemental plat is created (enlarging the detail for easier drafting and reading). A Use Plat is created for certain uses, such as oil and gas leasing, coal leasing, and other minerals.

Minerals

This category includes themes such as Mining Claims, Solid Non-Energy Leasable Minerals, and Mineral Material Disposal Sites. (Please see the ENERGY category for Coal and Oil and Gas and the LANDS category for Federal Mineral Estate - Subsurface Ownership.)

BLM Colorado Mineral Material Disposal Sites - generalized features created using records extracted from BLM’s LR2000 case record database and matching to PLSS.

Data Links:

BLM Colorado Mining Claims - generalized features created using records extracted from BLM’s LR2000 case record database and matching to PLSS. An error report is generated for records that do not match. Multiple mining claims may be located within the same area. (The density layer is used to illustrate this.)

Data Links:

BLM Colorado Solid Non-Energy Leasable Minerals - generalized features created using records extracted from BLM’s LR2000 case record database and matching to PLSS. The record selection criteria specified authorized and pending prospecting permits, preference right leases, exploration leases, competitive leases, noncompetitive leases and use permits for the following commodities:(1) Phosphate (pho) (2) Sodium (sod) (3) Potassium (pot) (4) Sulfur (sul) (5) Gilsonite (gil) (6) Hardrock minerals (hdr).

    Planning

This category includes themes having to do with planning and land management data including land use planning boundaries and office or area specific planning activities.

    Range

This category includes themes having to do with livestock grazing and range uses including allotment boundaries and wild horse and burro areas.

BLM Colorado Grazing - A grazing pasture is simply a subset of a grazing allotment, where the grazing of livestock occurs. An allotment has one or more pastures, or an allotment can have no pastures on it at all.  The vacant allotment dataset is a subset of the Grazing Allotment dataset.  These allotments were pulled from the BLM Rangeland Administration System (RAS) as vacant.  Verification of vacancy needs to be made with the respective field office.

    Data Links:

BLM Colorado Wild Horse and Burro - Herd Management Areas are congressionally-designated areas of land to which specific laws and regulations pertaining to the management of wild horses and burros are applied. Through land use planning, BLM evaluates each Herd Area to determine if it has adequate food, water, cover and space to sustain healthy and diverse wild horse and burro populations over the long-term. The areas which meet these criteria are then designated as Herd Management Areas.

    Recreation

This category includes themes such as campgrounds and trailheads.
