2022 Black Mountain HMA Nuisance Wild Burro Gather [Complete]
Purpose of Gather:
The purpose of the gather is to address an overpopulation of wild burros within the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) in response to requests to remove wild burros located outside of the herd management area in areas not designated for their long-term use and to address public safety and private property concerns.
Details of Gather:
The BLM plans to remove a minimum of 80 nuisance burros from private land outside of the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) between the months of January 2022 and April 2022 via bait and/or water trapping. BLM staff will set temporary traps on private lands, and will remove the panels, hay and manure once the trapping is complete. For the purpose of this gather no burros will be treated with fertility control. All trapping operations will be overseen by the Colorado River District - Kingman Field Office.
Public Observation:
No public viewing will be available during the water and bait trapping portion of the gather.
Adoption Information:
Animals removed from the Black Mountain HMA will be made available for adoption or purchase at Florence Wild Horse and Burro Training and Off-range Corral through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Sales Program.
Background:
The BLM manages free-roaming wild horses and burros on public lands as part of its multiple-use mission, with the goal of supporting healthy wild horses and burros on healthy public rangelands. The BLM is responsible for determining and maintaining appropriate management levels (AML) for each herd and works to achieve that population target through a variety of management processes, including limiting reproduction in some herds through the use of birth control and gathers that remove excess animals from the range.
