2022 - 2023 Black Mountain HMA Wild Burro Gather
The second session of gathers began on October 15 2022 and utilizes the national bait trap contract. This session is expected to last 6 months.
The first session of this gather was conducted between May and June 2022, utilizing a national drive trap contract, and successfully gathered 1,109 wild burros (447 Jacks, 550 Jennies, and 112 Foals) ; 16 were released, including 9 Jennies which were treated as part of the PZP-trial. The remaining burros were shipped to our Florence Off-Range Corral, and administratively entered into our systems and are available for private placement.
Purpose of Gather:
The purpose of the gather is to address an overpopulation of wild burros within the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) to achieve a thriving natural ecological balance, alleviate deterioration of the rangeland, to respond to requests to remove wild burros located outside of the herd management area in areas not designated for their long-term use and to address public safety and private property concerns.
Details of Gather:
In this session of the gather, beginning on October 15 2022, the BLM plans to remove approximately 700 excess wild burros utilizing the national bait trap contract. Some burros gathered during operations may be part of the Humane Society Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) project. If captured, these burros will be treated with PZP and released back to the area near their capture site.
This session of the gather is expected to take about 6 months. All gather operations will be overseen by the BLM Colorado River District, Kingman Field Office, and Arizona State Office.

Public Observation:
While limited/coordinated public viewing was offered during the first gather session, there will be no public viewing opportunities for this second gather session due to the nature of the gather.
Adoption Information:
Animals removed from the Black Mountain HMA will be made available for adoption or purchase at Florence Wild Horse and Burro Training and Off-range Corral through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Sales Program.
Background:
The BLM manages free-roaming wild horses and burros on public lands as part of its multiple-use mission, with the goal of supporting healthy wild horses and burros on healthy public rangelands. The BLM is responsible for determining and maintaining appropriate management levels (AML) for each herd and works to achieve that population target through a variety of management processes, including limiting reproduction in some herds through the use of birth control and gathers that remove excess animals from the range.
