Fire Restrictions

This page is used to post fire restrictions including fire prevention orders and fire closure orders for BLM-managed lands in Alaska.

Fire prevention orders list restrictions on public activity, such as the use of open fires or fireworks.

Fire closure orders restrict public access to specific areas due to wildfire-related safety concerns.

 

Fairbanks District Office

  • Fire Prevention Order AK020-25-001, issued April 10, 2025, for federal lands in the Gilmore Creek and Gold Run Creek areas near Fairbanks, including the NOAA facility on the Steese Highway. The Fire Prevention Order begins at 12:01 a.m. April 15 and expires at midnight October 31.

 

  • REPLACED by Fire Closure Order AK020-25-007 on July 28, 2025 Fire Closure Order AK020-25-002, issued June 18, 2025, closed public access to the western portion of the White Mountains National Recreation Area due to ongoing wildland fire activity associated with the Obrien fire (#172). The closure includes trails, public use cabins, trail shelters and the Wickersham Dome Trailhead (mile 28 Elliott Highway), which may be used as a base camp for firefighters nearby. 

     

  • RESCINDED July 10, 2025 Fire Closure Order AK020-25-003, issued June 19, 2025, closed public access to the trails and all areas off the road system in the White Mountains National Recreation Area in the Nome Creek Travel Management Zone due to ongoing wildland fire activity associated with the Ophir fire (#216). 

     

  • RESCINDED June 28, 2025 - Fire Closure Order AK020-25-004, issued June 22, 2025, closed public access to the Marion Creek Falls Trail due to ongoing wildland fire activity associated with the Marion Fire ( #295). 

 

  • RESCINDED July 21, 2025  Fire Closure Order AK020-25-005, issued June 23, 2025, closed public access to the Lower Birch Creek Wayside due to ongoing wildland fire activity associated with the Turtle Fire ( #243). 

     

  • RESCINDED July 11, 2025 Fire Prevention Order AK020-25-006, issued July 1, 2025 restricts open fires, fireworks, and explosives on BLM-managed lands throughout the District except for areas north Wiseman, Alaska.

     

  • Fire Closure Order AK020-25-007, issued July 28, 2025, rescinds and replaces order AK020-25-002 to reduce the area that was closed to public access under AK020-25-002 in the western portion of the WMNRA due to wildland fire activity associated with the Obrien fire (#172).  This order immediately opens public access to a one-mile area around the Wickersham Dome Trailhead. Starting on Aug. 1, the order further reduces the area closed, opening access to Lee’s and Moose Creek cabins, and Wickersham Dome. Although reduced in size, the fire closure is still needed for public and firefighter safety due to activity associated with the Obrien Fire (#172). The Fire Closure Order begins immediately on July 28, 2025, and will remain in force until rescinded.

Anchorage District Office

  • RESCINDED July 16, 2026 Fire Prevention Order AK010-25-001 issued July 3, 2025 restricts open fires, fireworks, and explosives on BLM-managed lands throughout the District except for the far west and panhandle. The order went into effect July 3, 2025 and was rescinded July 16, 2025.
