BLM Nevada Air Resources Program

In Nevada, the BLM ensures that grazing, mining and energy development on public land are sustainable and compatible with other land uses. The BLM manages nearly 48 million acres of public land for multiple use in Nevada, which accounts for about 63 percent of the state's land base. The Federal Land Policy Management Act (FLPMA) guides the BLM in managing public lands in a way that will protect air and atmospheric values from undue degradation. Air quality in Nevada is overseen by the U.S.EPA, and managed by State and local agencies that have been delegated authority under the Clean Air Act (CAA), including the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection in most of the State, the Clark County Division of Air Quality in Southern Nevada, and Northern Nevada Public Health in the Reno area. BLM coordinates with these agencies to access monitoring data, develop emission estimation methodologies, and to meet its CAA responsibility to determine that activities it approves on BLM public lands conform to the implementation plans the CAA agencies have established.
