2023 Palo Verde and Picacho State Recreation Area, California Nuisance Wild Burro Gather

The BLM will conduct the wild burro gather using temporary water and bait traps consisting of a series of corral panels stocked with water. Using the bait and trap method, the BLM plans to remove approximately 175 nuisance wild burros from private land outside the Chocolate-Mule Mountains and the Cibola/Trigo Herd Areas and Herd Management Areas (California side) through October 2023. BLM staff will set temporary traps on private lands and will remove the panels, hay and manure once trapping is complete. For the purpose of this gather no burros will be treated with fertility control.

Public Observation:

There will be no public viewing opportunities so as to minimize disturbances of the animals and to allow the BLM to safely perform gather operations.  Only essential gather operation personnel are authorized at the trap site during operations.  

Adoption Information:

Burros removed from private land outside the Chocolate-Mule Mountains and the Cibola/Trigo Herd Areas and Herd Management Areas will be made available for adoption or sale at the Ridgecrest Regional Wild Horse and Burro Corrals through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption / Sales Program. Animals not adopted will be cared for in off-range pastures, where they retain their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burro Act.

Background:

The Northern and Eastern Colorado Desert Coordinated Management Plan (2002) identified the Chocolate-Mule Mountain Herd Area and  Herd Management Area and prescribed an appropriate management level of 121 burros The approved Resource Management Plan (2010) identifies the Cibola-Trigo Heard Area and Heard Management Area along the California side of the Colorado River, where burros freely move between both Heard Management Areas. The estimated population for this Heard Management Area as of March 2023 is 1,069 wild burros based on various analytical population count data and reports.

This action is being taken to remove nuisance burros which are damaging private property and local farm fields in Palo Verde, California and at the Picacho State Recreation Area which are creating a public safety hazard to the public, safety hazards for motorist along local roadways.  

 

 

Currently, Hurricane Hillary has created issues with road access into the Picacho State Recreation Area.
