Mainstem Access Locations

North Fork Access Locations

The John Day River North Fork Access Locations map displays boating access points for the North Fork John Day River upstream of Kimberly.

2023 John Day River Boater's Guide ($14 at the Prineville District Office, $19.99 online)

Waterproof, spiral-bound, 67-page book with information on 174 miles of the the John Day River from Kimberly to Tumwater Falls. The guide includes safety tips, leave-no-trace and river etiquette, along with topographical maps. Each map shows river miles, land ownership, and potential boat-in camping areas along the river with corresponding descriptions.

2019 Lower Deschutes & John Day Rivers ($14)

Waterproof fold-out map covers the mainstem between Highway 26 and the Columbia River, including Service Creek to Cottonwood Bridge.

2003 Umatilla National Forest ($14)

Shows road access, land ownership, and topographic features. Does not denote River Miles or campsites.

Guides & Outfitters

Commercial Permits

Commercial businesses offering guided trips on the mainstem or North Fork of the John Day River are required to obtain a permit from the Prineville District Office of the Bureau of Land Management prior to operations, phone 541-416-6700.

A trip is considered to be commercial if the group fails to meet any one of the following requirements for a non-commercial trip:

1. There is a bona fide sharing of expenses
2. No fees are collected in excess of the actual expense of the trip
3. There is no financial gain by any member of the group
4. No salary is directed from shared expenses of the trip
5. No charge is collected for use of the equipment
