FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Due to the lack of adequate snow cover, the Bureau of Land Management is extending summer motor vehicle limitations in the White Mountains National Recreation Area and Steese National Conservation Area until November 1, 2026. The summer extension allows continued use of wheeled off-highway vehicles (OHVs) under the summer weight limitations, while motorized vehicle use in winter motorized areas remains limited until adequate snow cover is present.

Typically, the BLM transitions to winter motor vehicle restrictions in these areas on October 15. This year’s snow cover is not expected to reach the target depth of six inches prior to this summer-to-winter transition date. As a result, the Eastern Interior Field Office is extending the summer authorization for wheeled OHV use that would be otherwise prohibited under the winter limitations; winter motorized limitations authorize snowmobile only.

The White Mountains National Recreation Area and Steese National Conservation Area remain open to all forms of non-motorized use year-round, including hiking, equestrian, and bicycling. Winter motor vehicle limitations will now be in effect Nov. 1 – April 30. If target snow cover depths are reached sooner, an earlier transition date will be announced.

While many boundaries and trails are marked to help with navigation, some trail work is still in progress, and some areas may not be well marked. To assist with navigation and learn more about motor vehicle limitations, visitors are encouraged to use the BLM’s georeferenced PDF maps for Summer Recreation and Winter Recreation. More information is available on the BLM Georeferenced PDF Maps webpage, including tips for using georeferenced map applications and your mobile device’s GPS to navigate in areas without cellular service.

When riding the trails, please travel responsibly, wear a helmet and ride to reduce damage to the surrounding area and resources. For access information and useful links, monitor the White Mountains Trail Updates .
