Eastern States Threatened and Endangered Species Program
The BLM manages scattered parcels of public land and 39 million subsurface acres in 31 states east of and bordering the Mississippi River. The habitats managed by BLM include beach dunes, old-growth pine forests, northern hardwood forests, river islands, wetlands, and much more. With this diversity of habitat comes a diversity of species. BLM Eastern States manages habitat for at least 130 Endangered Species Act-listed species, including West Indian manatee, red-cockaded woodpecker, Alabama beach mouse, and rusty patched bumblebee. By working closely with state, federal, and other partners, BLM manages habitats to avoid and minimize impacts to the species and promote recovery and delisting.
