PHIPPS - DEATH HALLOW INSTANT STUDY AREA

Values

The light colored Navajo Sandstone canyons and mesas of the upper Escalante River drainage are distinct from the darker red canyons further downstream. At higher elevation, the sandstone is more sharply broken due to fractures and joints in the rock. The Escalante River itself has carved perhaps the deepest canyon in the watershed. Death Hollow, Sand Creek and Calf Creek have all carved deep, sinuous canyons.
