On September 24, 2011, more than 180,000 volunteers at over 2,000 sites throughout the United States are expected to volunteer to help restore the beauty and vitality of our public lands as part of the 18thannual National Public Lands Day (NPLD).  This year’s event will also commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA).Recent weather events have made it necessary to change the schedule of activities that had been previously advertised for the NPLD celebration at the Meadowood SRMA in Lorton, Va. Many of the trails that would have been open to visitors have sustained substantial storm damage, and must be repaired to prevent any further erosion and to provide for public safety. The BLM asks the public to come out and help restore this popular recreational trail system!Other NPLD activities at Meadowood will still include bike riding, a photo contest, kids crafts and opportunities to explore many natural areas at Meadowood. Volunteers will be presented with a free NPLD T-shirt, and will be invited for refreshments at Noon in appreciation for all their hard work. This year’s event will be held at Meadowoods’ Mustang Trailhead (10702 Harley Road, Lorton,Virginia, 22079) starting at 9 AM and will take place rain or shine.NPLD is coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation in partnership with eight federal land management agencies, and is sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. and Northrop Grumman. NPLD events will take place coast to coast. This year’s events are focused on our renewed national commitment to Michelle Obama’s Move Outside initiative, by spending time outdoors and being more active in an effort to fight childhood obesity. If you would like more information, please contact Theresa Jefferson, phone 703-339-0410.
