BLM plans pile burning projects in Lacks Creek area

ARCATA, Calif. – Bureau of Land Management fire crews will be burning piles of brush and small trees in the Lacks Creek Management Area near the community of Hoopa from Jan. 8 through Jan. 17. Crews will ignite the piles only when weather conditions and fuel moisture are suitable for safe and successful burning.
Firefighters plan to cover about 10 acres daily in the project area about seven miles west of Hoopa and about seven miles north of California Highway 299. Smoke will be visible during ignition between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day, with light smoke in the area up to a day after burning. Fire crews will stay in the area each afternoon to monitor the piles after they burn.
The piles were constructed by hand and with heavy equipment after vegetation was cut in projects designed to improve forest health and to remove hazardous fuels.
