CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Bureau of Land Management’s Cedar City Field Office is hosting two events on Sept. 30 to celebrate National Public Lands Day – a trail building event at Shurtz Canyon in Iron County or an archeological data collection event at Frisco Kiln in Beaver County.

Volunteers interested in the Shurtz Canyon project will meet at the trailhead at 9 a.m. to construct trails and trailhead fences until noon.

Volunteers can also join a 9:30 a.m. archeological survey at the Frisco Kiln site to measure, photograph and document historic kilns that produced charcoal during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Only 12 slots are available for this project and volunteers must sign up in advance. Access to the Frisco Kiln site requires a high clearance vehicle.

All participants will need to bring water, snacks, gloves and sunscreen.

For more information about the projects and directions to the project sites, contact Leisel Whitmore at (435) 865-3012 or lwhitmore@blm.gov.
