BUFFALO, Wyo. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host a Fortification Creek Planning Area meeting on Nov. 9 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Johnson County Fire District 1 Station off the North By-Pass in Buffalo, Wyo.  As stewards, the BLM manages public lands for the benefit of current and future generations, while supporting conservation as we pursue our multiple use mission.

As part of its Fortification Creek management, the BLM committed to an annual public meeting to discuss development and monitoring of performance standards.  This year’s meeting will include updates on additional Fortification Creek area projects such as the Wyoming Public Lands Initiative developing management recommendations for the Wilderness Study Area, potential public access, and BLM’s integrated vegetation management program.

The Fortification Creek Planning Area is located in Campbell, Johnson, and Sheridan counties, Wyo. encompassing 100,655 acres. It is home to a resident elk herd, a Wilderness Study Area, and has large areas of steep slopes and sensitive soils. There is interest in increasing public access and developing the area’s oil and gas resources. The Fortification Creek Planning Area management plan includes seven performance standards for elk protection and a reclamation standard that oil and gas operators must meet in order to develop.
