KANAB, Utah – Construction on the Ponderosa Grove Campground Expansion project is scheduled to begin on August 6, 2020 and continue through September. The 16-acre campground is located in Kane County along Hancock Road, approximately 16 miles northwest of Kanab, on public lands managed by the BLM Kanab Field Office.

The project will expand Ponderosa Grove Campground from nine campsites to approximately forty campsites, including up to 10 recreational vehicle (RV) sites, up to 30 car-camping sites, up to five walk-in campsites, and one group campsite with approximately 10 parking stalls and one shade structure.

Visitation to the campground has significantly increased over the past several years. Adjacent to both motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities near the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park and the Moquith Mountain Wilderness Study Area, Ponderosa Grove Campground consistently fills to capacity during the spring and fall seasons.

“When the campground is full visitors will frequently set up camp elsewhere, which can impact resources and the recreational experiences of other visitors,” said Kanab Field Manager Whit Bunting. “These impacts can include damage to vegetation, proliferation of fire pits, inappropriate disposal of trash, and the accumulation of human waste. Our goal is to reduce these impacts by providing more campsites and amenities.”

During construction, crews plan to keep as many campsites open as possible. As a result, there will be equipment operating during daylight hours within close proximity of the campsites and there may be dust in the air. Dust-sensitive visitors should use caution while in the area and take appropriate precautions.
