GLENNALLEN, Alaska – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announces the availability of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Proposed Haines Amendment to the Ring of Fire Resource Management Plan. The amendment will guide future land management action on approximately 317,000 acres of BLM-managed public lands in the Haines area.

“One of the key issues in this process centered on sensitive mountain goat populations, and this proposed plan amendment strikes an appropriate balance between economic development and protection of wildlife habitat,” said BLM Alaska State Director Chad Padgett. “In addition, the management practices outlined in the amendment provide us the flexibility to manage these public lands based upon the changing conditions.”

Throughout this planning process, the BLM worked with the State of Alaska and Haines and Skagway Boroughs, Alaska Native organizations, and neighboring Federal land management agencies.

The publication of the Notice of Availability of the Proposed Haines Amendment and Final EIS in the Federal Register on Oct. 11, 2019, begins a 30-day protest period and a 60-day Governor’s consistency review for the proposed amendment. Instructions for filing a protest can be found at https://www.blm.gov/programs/planning-and-nepa/public-participation/filing-a-plan-protest. The BLM expects to release the record of decision on the proposed plan in January 2020.

The Proposed Haines Amendment and Final EIS can be viewed on the BLM’s ePlanning website. A link to ePlanning can be found on the project web page at www.blm.gov/alaska/rof-haines-amendment. In addition, copies will be available for review at the following locations:
