This Information Bulletin (IB) announces the availability of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Technical Note 457, Night Sky and Dark Environments: Best Management Practices for Artificial Light at Night on BLM-Managed Lands. This resource is publicly available on the BLM Library website at: BLM Technical Note 457.

This technical note provides awareness of best management practices for effective outdoor lighting to reduce light pollution. Neither the IB nor the technical note represent requirements for implementation of best management practices to protect dark sky resources. Rather, this information is intended to be available to BLM authorized officers to support alternatives development and agency decisions on BLM-administered lands when artificial light at night is identified as an issue or is being managed to support resource management plan objectives.

Technical Note 457 is the result of an interdisciplinary effort and collaboration between the BLM and Argonne National Laboratory. Please share widely.

For questions, please contact Julie McGrew, Chief Landscape Architect, at (970) 456-6844 or jamcgrew@blm.gov.
