Each Veterans Day, we pause to recognize the people who have worn our nation’s uniform and defended the freedoms we enjoy. Their service does not always end when they leave the military. Across the federal government, veterans continue serving their country in civilian roles, bringing leadership, dedication, and a commitment to the mission that strengthens agencies and communities nationwide.

Veterans make up a significant portion of the federal workforce, with nearly one-third of federal employees having served in the Armed Forces. Their experience in teamwork, problem-solving, and service before self helps agencies accomplish critical missions that benefit the American people every day. From managing natural resources and supporting local communities, to protecting public lands and preserving our nation’s history, veterans continue answering the call to serve.

The skills veterans gain during military service often align closely with the BLM mission. Attention to detail, adaptability, accountability, and a strong sense of duty help veterans navigate complex challenges while working with partners, communities, and stakeholders. Whether supporting conservation efforts, facilitating responsible energy development, managing public records, or engaging with the public, veterans contribute valuable expertise that helps the agency fulfill its responsibilities.

Across Eastern States, employees work together to strengthen habitats, enhance recreational opportunities, support resource stewardship, and ensure public lands remain accessible and productive. These efforts reflect a shared commitment to service and collaboration that mirrors many of the values learned in military service.

This Veterans Day, we honor not only the sacrifices veterans made in uniform but also the continued contributions they make as public servants. Their dedication reminds us that service takes many forms, and that commitment to country can continue long after military careers end.

To all veterans across BLM Eastern States and throughout the federal workforce: thank you for your service, your leadership, and your ongoing commitment to the American people. Your contributions help protect our nation’s resources, strengthen our communities, and ensure that future generations benefit from the lands and opportunities entrusted to our care.
