Engineers Week Spotlight: Wes Gilmer, Mining Engineer

As part of our Engineers Week celebration, we’re proud to highlight the contributions of Wes Gilmer, P.E., Mining Engineer with the Southeastern States District Office – Division of Minerals. Wes plays a vital role in managing mineral resources on public lands and ensuring compliance with federal regulations. 

Meet Wes Gilmer!

Current Position: 

Mining Engineer, Southeastern States District Office – Division of Minerals   

What does your role involve? 

Wes enforces the Mineral Leasing Act, reviews lease proposals and mine plans, recommends approval decisions to leadership, and calculates both lease bond requirements and lease purchase values. His work helps safeguard public lands while supporting responsible resource development. 

Background and Experience 

With over 20 years in the mining industry—including coal, clay, and limestone—Wes has held engineering-related positions across operations management, financial analysis, and as a chief engineer. For the past seven years, he has served in government roles in Idaho and Tennessee, bringing a wealth of expertise to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). 

Why Engineering? 

Wes’s path to engineering was unconventional. After an early career change, he discovered a passion for problem-solving and public service through engineering—a field that allowed him to make a lasting impact. 

Favorite Part of the Job 

“Serving the public,” Wes says. His time in industry gave him a deep appreciation for regulatory professionals who were helpful and solution oriented. Today, he strives to provide that same level of support and integrity in his work with BLM.
