Erik Norelius recognized with BLM Superior Service Award

CHEYENNE, Wyo.— Erik Norelius, a Natural Resource Specialist with the Bureau of Land Management Wyoming State Office, has been recognized with the Superior Service Award. This prestigious recognition highlights employees who have made significant achievements or provided exceptional service in support of the Department of the Interior’s mission.

Norelius, who has been with the BLM for more than 20 years, primarily focuses on fluid minerals leasing and development, including oil and gas projects. His role involves balancing the nation’s energy needs with protecting surface resources such as wildlife habitats, rangelands, and waterways.

“I enjoy finding ways to balance the needs of the public from an energy standpoint while also minimizing impacts to our natural resources,” Norelius said.

Norelius was surprised to receive the Superior Service Award. He expressed gratitude and humility when finding out.

“I didn’t think I would receive an award for simply doing my job to the best of my abilities,” he shared.

One of the accomplishments Norelius takes the most pride in is his ability to navigate complex issues surrounding private land development of federally managed minerals. He also values passing on knowledge to colleagues to continue to improve land management practices.

Though he doesn’t view himself as a traditional leader, Norelius approaches challenges with a thoughtful and collaborative mindset. “I try to understand the issue, use past experiences, discuss options, and find the best possible outcome,” he explained. “Like many in the agency, I just want to get the job done as correctly and efficiently as possible.”

Norelius offered valuable advice to aspiring new BLM leaders: embrace the opportunity to listen and learn from colleagues across all fields of expertise. “Listening to specialists, engineers, archaeologists, and others has allowed me to think outside the box and find better ways of completing tasks,” he said.

He credits his success to his parents’ guidance and the support of his colleagues and management. “This award isn’t just mine—I couldn’t do my job without the incredible support of everyone around me,” he said. “This award really goes to all these folks.”
