2024 East Pershing Complex Wild Horse Gather
Purpose of Gather:
The purpose of the gather is to prevent undue or unnecessary degradation of the public lands associated with excess wild horses, to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands, consistent with the provisions of Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Horses Act. This gather also address resources issues related to drought and past fire damage and protect Habitat for other wildlife species such as sage grouse, pronghorn antelope and mule deer. Removing excess animals will enable significant progress toward achieving the Standards for Rangeland Health.
Details of Gather:
The gather will begin on or about December 28, 2023 and will be conducted by the helicopter assist method. The agency plans to gather and remove approximately 2,875 wild horses.
The horses will be transported to Winnemucca Off Range Corrals, in Winnemucca, NV. Once animals arrive at the holding facilities, they will be checked by a veterinarian and prepared for the BLM’s adoption and sale program or long-term pastures or sanctuaries.
Public Observation:
Visitors to the gather, including all media and members of the public, must RSVP by calling (775) 623-1567 – you must make your reservation by 5:30 p.m. the night before you intend to visit the gather activities. If you have RSVP’d, no later than 5:30 p.m. the night before, you will receive a call back on meeting time and location no later than 9 p.m. that evening.
Pending the location of the trap sites viewing opportunities are subject to change. If the traps are on privately-owned property, trap observations will be limited. If the traps are on public lands, trap observation opportunities will be daily.
Observers will meet at specified locations that are subject to change; locations will be determined based on the location of the traps. All observers will need to sign in on the visitor’s log sheet and there will be a short briefing for the day and introductions.
The observers will be led by either an agency staff member or ranger out to the gather site of the day and all observers must stay until gather daily operations are completed. We may not know the exact location of these sites; therefore, it is extremely important that visitors be flexible.

Background:
Location: The East Pershing Complex is located from Winnemucca south to Lovelock and east of I-80 to just east of the Tobin HMA. Pershing County covers the majority of the Complex; however small portions extend into Humboldt, Churchill, and Lander Counties. Southern sections of the Augusta and North Stillwater HMAs are situated within the administrative boundaries of the Battle Mountain, Carson City, and Winnemucca Districts; however the Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office is the administrative lead.
Size: The Complex consists of approximately 2,191,650 total acres, both public and private land. The Complex encompasses three Herd Management Areas (HMA) (North Stillwater, Augusta Mountains, and Tobin Range) and four Herd Areas (HA) (Humboldt, East Range, Sonoma Range, and Augusta Mountains).
Topography/Vegetation/Climate: The East Pershing Complex is located in the Great Basin within the Basin and Range Physiographic Province, a region characterized by a series of generally north-trending mountain ranges separated by alluvial valleys.
Vegetation: Vegetative types found within the East Pershing Complex include juniper-sage types in the higher elevations, to sagebrush-grass types at moderate elevations, to shadscale-shrub and greasewood types in the valley bottoms.
Climate: The climate is arid, characterized by warm, dry summers and moderately wet, cold winters. Elevation changes generally result in more rain and snow falling on the mountains than in the intervening valleys. Drought conditions occur as frequently as 6 out of every 10 years.
Wildlife: The main wildlife include Sage Grouse (177,000 acres priority habitat and 248,000 of general habitat), Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer (983,000 acres of habitat with 554,000 being crucial), and Pronghorn Antelope (224,000 acres of habitat with 32,000 being crucial). Other wildlife species include Western Burrowing Owl, Pygmy Rabbit, Raptors, Brewer’s Sparrow, Loggerhead Shrike, Sage Thrasher, and bat species.
