2024 McGee Mountain Herd Management Area Wild Burro Bait and Water Gather

The Bureau of Land Management’s Humboldt River Field Office plans to begin the McGee Mountain Herd Management Area Wild Burro Bait and Water Gather on or about March 18, 2024.

Purpose of Gather:

The purpose of the gather is to achieve the Appropriate Management Level (AML) within the McGee Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) and prevent undue or unnecessary degradation of the public lands associated with excess wild burros and to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands, consistent with the provisions of Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.

Details of Gather:

On or about March 18, 2024, the Humboldt River Field Office plans to begin a wild burro gather on and around the McGee Mountain HMA located approximately 24 miles southwest of Denio Junction, in Humboldt County, Nevada. The agency will conduct gather operations utilizing temporary bait and water traps consisting of a series of corral panels stocked with water/forage; no helicopters will be used. The gather area is comprised of both private and public lands.

Based on the recent aerial survey conducted March 2024, the current estimated population is 47 wild burros. The staff plans to gather and remove approximately 22 excess wild burros. The most recent gather in the McGee Mountain HMA occurred in 2015, where 115 excess wild burros were removed.

Removing the excess wild burros will achieve the AML for the McGee Mountain HMA.

Public Observation:

Due to the nature of the bait and water trap method, burros are reluctant to approach the trap site when there is too much activity; therefore, only essential gather operations personnel will be allowed at the trap site during gather operations.

Adoption Information:

Burros identified for removal will be transported to the  Palomino Valley Off-Range Facility, Reno, Nevada, where they will be checked by a veterinarian and readied for the agencies wild horse and burro adoption program. Those that are not placed into a new home will be cared for in off-range pastures, where they live off the rest of their lives on grass pastures. For information on how to adopt a wild horse, visit www.blm.gov/whb.

Background:

Burros within the HMA are the descendants of pack animals used by miners and sheep ranchers. The majority of the burros exhibit a gray color pattern. Burros on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, which is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are not managed by BLM.

Location: The McGee Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) for burros is located in northwestern Humboldt County, approximately 90 miles northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada. The area is bordered on the north and west by the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Size: The area consists of 41,160 acres of BLM land.

Topography/Vegetation: Terrain in the area consists of a broad highly dissected basaltic plateau with a rocky escarpment. Elevations range from approximately 4,300 feet in the Bog Hot Valley area to 6,667 feet on McGee Mountain. Climate is characterized by warm dry days, cool nights and low yearly precipitation that ranges from 6 to 8 inches at lower elevations to approximately 12 inches at higher elevations. The Blue Lakes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is approximately 10 miles southeast of the HMA. The WSA is not used by burros. Other recreational use includes rockhounding, hiking, hunting, and camping. There are old, inactive mines in the area. Vegetation varies from salt desert shrub communities at lower elevations to big sagebrush/grass communities at upper elevations. Typical species in the salt desert shrub community includes shadscale, black greasewood, and Indian ricegrass. Species typical of the sagebrush/grass communities include low sage, Wyoming sagebrush, rabbitbrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, basin wildrye, squirreltail, and downy brome.

Wildlife: The area is also utilized by domestic livestock and numerous wildlife species. Typical wildlife species found in the area include mule deer, big horn sheep, antelope, chukar partridge, sage grouse, and various birds, rodents and reptiles. Mule deer and antelope use the area as winter range.

AML:  25-41 Burros
