Reward offered leading to suspect in rock art vandalism case

MONTROSE, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management is seeking information regarding vandalism to a Native American rock art panel located on public lands in the Paradox Valley of western Colorado. The vandalism occurred on or around Jan. 1, 2014. The vandals carved “AFS,” “SDT” and “Happy New Year’s 2014” into the rock panel.
According to a BLM archeologist, the rock art panel is between 2,000 and 4,000-years-old, and the site has been identified by local Native American tribes as a sacred site. The estimated restoration cost to the panel is in excess of $4,000.
Any person with information regarding the identification of suspects, vandalism to the rock art panel or the identity of AFS and SDT should contact BLM Law Enforcement at 970-240-5341. Those submitting information leading to the conviction of the suspects may be eligible for a cash reward up to $500.
