CASPER, Wyo. – Join the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center for a weekend of life in 1800s Wyoming this Saturday and Sunday. Reenactors will call the Trails Center “home” as they set up a pioneer trail camp and homestead cabin for the weekend, an experience where all ages are encouraged to attend.

Nic Scalicky and Daniel Mattern are bringing to life a pioneer camp, as the experienced reenactors, portray a group of pioneers camped along the Overland Trail as they head West. Additionally, Jean Smart and her skilled crew of ladies are transforming the Trails Center Pony Express Station into two homestead cabins. These women are telling the story of the ladies who never made it to the coast but instead decided to build homes right here in Casper.

Pioneer Living History weekend is the chance to get a look into the daily life of a pioneer. Reenactors will be Dutch oven cooking, sewing on hand crank machines, demonstrating pioneer past times, explaining the average life of the pioneer, and giving visitors a hands-on pioneer experience. Ever wondered what pioneers wore? Now’s the time to find out and try on a few outfits. Special presentations are scheduled throughout the weekend, but the camp and cabins will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday.

Special Demonstrations Schedule:

  • Saturday, July 31: Pioneer wedding at 11:00 am
  • Saturday, July 31: Pioneer wedding reception at 2:00 pm
  • Sunday, August 1: Non-denominational church service at 10:00 am
  • Sunday, August 1: Homesteading on the Prairie with Jean Smart at 1:00 pm

“Come get hitched while hitching your wagon!” Or at least see what life was like for a pioneer along the trail in 1800s Wyoming said Kathleen Hanson, Education Technician. “Our amazing crew of living historians have a lot of fun events planned for visitors and locals alike. This is definitely a weekend the whole family will remember.”
