Eugene, Ore. – Volunteers are invited to join the Bureau of Land Management, Wetlands Resources and Educational Network (WREN), and the City of Eugene for a National Public Lands Day event in the West Eugene Wetlands on Saturday, September 24, 2016. The all-ages event will be one of many offered across the country that day to celebrate service in our nation’s treasured public lands.

The event will take place from 9 am to noon at Bertelsen Nature Park. Participants should meet at the parking area for the Stewart Pond Disc Golf Course, located across from 3888 Stewart Road. Volunteers should wear outdoor-appropriate clothing and footwear. Gloves, tools and refreshments will be provided by the City of Eugene. Participants will also receive a National Public Lands Day t-shirt.

Volunteer projects planned in the Stewart Pond area of the wetlands include trail maintenance, bird box installation, trash collection and vegetation removal. This work will build on recent efforts by the BLM and Eugene Disc Golf Club to provide new recreational opportunities.

The event will mark the official opening of the Stewart Pond Disc Golf Course, the first 18 hole disc golf course offered by BLM. The course is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, and is free of charge. It features a seasonal play design for wet and dry conditions. The course is appropriate for all ages and abilities, from beginner to the advanced disc golf enthusiast.

“The BLM is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act which ushered in the era of managed multiple-use on BLM lands”, said Aron King, Staff Lead for the Siuslaw Field Office. “The dedication of our partners to help us realize this legislation, as well as implement the BLM’s Recreation Strategy to connect communities to the outdoors has been astounding.”
