CRAIG, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management Little Snake Field Office and partners invite you to volunteer and enjoy your public lands beginning Aug. 14 to celebrate National Public Lands Day.

The BLM is partnering with Conservation Colorado and the Colorado Mountain Club for a National Public Lands Day project in the Little Yampa Canyon Special Recreation Management Area 35 miles south of Craig.  The weekend event is designed to link volunteers with opportunities to improve and enjoy public lands.

The BLM is looking for volunteers to help with Vista Trail maintenance and then stay and enjoy Little Yampa Canyon SRMA.  Registration will begin Friday at 1:00 p.m. followed by a geocaching hunt at 6:00 p.m., and a campfire talk beginning at 8:00 p.m. with free hot dogs and marshmallows.

Registration will continue Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., which will include a safety talk before trail maintenance begins at 10:00 a.m.

Volunteers should expect to work for at least 4 hours on Saturday.  Please have plenty of water, sunscreen, chap stick, hat, work gloves, and lunch/snacks.  Trail work is expected to go until 2:00 p.m. at which time the group will head back to the camping area for downtime, or a trip to Juniper Hot Springs or the river for some water play.  For those camping Saturday night, a spaghetti supper will be provided followed by a star talk.

Sunday morning for those who wish to stick around, there will be a tour of the historical, natural, and paleontological features the area has to offer beginning at 8:00 a.m., which will last for approximately 3 hours.

All volunteer will receive a free fee-free day pass to a participating public land (i.e., National Park, Forest Service, etc.) and goody bag.

It is highly recommended that you RSVP so that we can get an accurate count for the amount of supplies and goodies we will need.  Please contact Gina Robison, Outdoor Recreation Planner at 970-826-5083 or send an email to grobison@blm.gov with any questions or to RSVP.
