Fire prompts temporary closure of BLM campground north of Helena

(BUTTE, Mont.) – The Bureau of Land Management is temporarily closing the White Sandy Recreation Area north of Helena due to fire activity. The closure is in accordance with an evacuation order issued by the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

The North Hills Fire was reported shortly after noon on Friday, July 26. As of Saturday morning, it was estimated to be 100 acres.

Lewis and Clark County Emergency Management has set up an information line at 406-447-1605.

The White Sandy Recreation Area is located on the west side of Hauser Lake and has a 32-site campground. BLM rangers are clearing the area in accordance with the evacuation order. The area is under a Red Flag Warning today due to a forecast of hot, dry and windy conditions which could result in critical fire behavior.
