WASHINGTON – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) invites all Americans to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week—from June 1-9—by visiting one of the many BLM-managed rivers, streams and lakes that provide access to countless recreational fishing and boating opportunities throughout the United States. The BLM manages over 130,000 miles of fishable rivers and streams with access to some of the nation’s most remote and pristine areas.

On Saturday, June 8, BLM will waive standard amenity and day-use fees for all fishing activities on BLM-managed lands.  Several fishing activities hosted by BLM will be free to the public, including the Kids Fishing Derby in Pinedale, Wyoming, an event that offers students an opportunity to learn about conservation from land management agencies.

“The BLM is proud to provide extensive access to America’s public lands for recreation- especially for outstanding BLM-managed rivers and lakes,” said Casey Hammond, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management, exercising the authority of the BLM Director. “We’re committed to providing the best-quality experience for the public to enjoy the many opportunities for adventure this summer and throughout the year. Get outside and enjoy!”

This National Fishing and Boating Week, and throughout the summer, get on the water with friends and family and enjoy a spectacular American pastime. For more information on fishing, boating, and other outdoor recreation opportunities on BLM-managed public lands, please visit https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation or www.recreation.gov.

BLM-managed lands are open for fishing unless specifically closed for specific resource protection purposes. Before heading out, make sure you are prepared. All anglers on public lands must have the required state license(s). That’s because states are responsible for managing wildlife within their borders for the trust and benefit of their residents, even if the hunting occurs on federal lands. You can search for state fishing licenses on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website at https://www.fws.gov/fishing/FishingLicense.html. Be safe, and remember to Leave No Trace.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
