Bypass reopens near Park Center Well as work continues

CAÑON CITY, Colo. – Contractors working on the Park Center well, north of Cañon City will reopen a bypass on County Road 9 (Red Canyon Road) as work continues at the well site. The traffic pattern will be temporarily altered through April.
The traffic bypass was put in place in December 2011 when the Park Center well’s valve froze and failed resulting in a geyser. Working with a local oil driller and construction company, BLM was able to control that flow. In November 2012, work at the site was delayed over the winter. Work is now resuming to complete the well.
In August 2010, the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office awarded a contract to drill a well to replace the deteriorating 80-year old original Park Center well. A new well was drilled but not yet completed for municipal water use.
The original Park Center Well has provided municipal water for more than 40 years to Park Center Water District users.
