Photo by BLM.ARCATA, Calif. – The public is invited to celebrate National Public Lands Day by volunteering with the BLM to help care for the public lands at the historic Trinidad Lighthouse and at the King Range National Conservation Area on California’s North Coast. National Public Lands Day, organized by the National Environmental Education Foundation, is the nation’s largest single day volunteer event for public lands.

“These events are great ways for community residents to partner with the Bureau of Land Management and other organizations to conserve and sustain public lands,” said BLM Arcata Field Office Manager Molly Brown.

On Friday, Sept. 22, volunteers can help the BLM collect information on raptor migration at King Range National Conservation Area. Participants will camp for the weekend at designated sites, recording birds of prey sightings. The project is for experienced birders. Please register by Wednesday, Sept. 20, by telephoning the King Range Project Office at 707-986-5400.

On Saturday, Sept.30, mountain bike enthusiasts/volunteers will take on trail maintenance projects on the Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail in the King Range National Conservation Area. Volunteers will meet at the Tolkan Campground at 10 a.m. and bicycle or hike to project sites along the trail. The BLM is offering volunteers free camping at the Tolkan Campground for the entire weekend. A volunteer appreciation barbecue is planned for Saturday afternoon. King Range National Conservation Area is located at 768 Shelter Cove Road, Whitethorn, California.

On Saturday, Sept 30, volunteers will turn their attention to the historic Trinidad Lighthouse on Trinidad Head.  From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., teams will plant native plants in areas that have been cleared of invasive ivy. Volunteers should park at the bottom of Trinidad Head and walk the half mile to the lighthouse grounds gate. Please wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, closed-toed shoes, and bring gloves, water, sunscreen and snacks.

Participants will receive National Public Lands Day tee-shirts and coupons, allowing free admission to national recreation sites such as national parks. To get to Trinidad Head from Highway 101, take the Main Street/Westhaven Drive Exit in Trinidad and go west on Main Street until it ends. Turn left onto Trinity Street and proceed until it ends at Edwards Street.
