BLM seeks public comments on proposed vegetation treatments south of Rifle

SILT, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management office in Silt now seeks public comment on proposed vegetation treatments south of Rifle to improve wildlife habitat and reduce fuel loads.
The proposed project area has experienced encroachment by Pinyon, Juniper and Oakbrush plant species that are less suitable for native wildlife. Pinyon/Juniper and Oakbrush have also created conditions for increased fire behavior. The proposed project will target closed canopy stands of Pinyon/Juniper to increase winter forage for wildlife and thin available fuels.
The proposed project is expected to take place later this summer through various treatment methods. There is potential for some of these areas to have high residual fuels from the treatments. Each of these areas will be evaluated in the future to see if they would benefit from prescribed fire in the years to follow.
