BLM to host National Public Lands Day event at Limekiln Picnic Area

(LEWISTOWN, Mont.) –Americans across the country will visit their favorite public lands Sept. 30, to help care for the treasured places where they play, learn, and relax.
In the Lewistown area, volunteers will make improvements to the Limekiln Picnic Area in celebration of the 24th annual National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.

The Bureau of Land Management Lewistown Field Office will host the National Public Lands Day Picnic Area maintenance event at 10 a.m., in Limekiln Canyon. The work site is located on Limekiln Road approximately 3 miles east of the junction of Rifle Range Road. Activities will include spreading gravel and grass seed to improve the characteristics of the designated parking area. Please, plan to bring a shovel or rake and a pair of gloves. Depending on the public turnout, the project should be completed in two hours.
Participants may choose to take a no-host 4.4-mile roundtrip hike to the Lewistown Overlook or the extended 7-mile loop after the project is finished.
The National Environmental Education Foundation coordinates National Public Lands Day volunteer efforts to improve and restore lands and facilities Americans use and enjoy daily.
Each year, NPLD volunteers provide tens of millions of dollars’ worth of services in one day that would otherwise take limited park staff months to accomplish. Last year, more than 200,000 Americans participated in events at more than 2,500 sites in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.
