BLM Continuing Fire Rehabilitation with Aerial Seeding

Boise, ID – The Bureau of Land Management is planning to conduct aerial seeding of several fire scars in the region beginning this week through the end of January, contingent on weather conditions. This seeding effort will encompass over 27,000 acres throughout the following areas:
- Soda Fire: Coal Mine Basin, Rockville, Shares Basin and Wilson Creek
- Crane Fire: near Crane Creek Reservoir
- Mile Marker 14 Fire: near Lucky Peak Reservoir
Aerial seeding involves low-flying helicopters with mechanical seed dispensers slung underneath as cargo. Signs will be placed along access roads and the public is encouraged to avoid these areas while seeding is taking place.
Seeding over snow will allow the seeds to be incorporated into the soil layer as melting occurs to mimic natural dispersal as much as possible. Operations could be delayed by high winds, fog, or storms.
The BLM is using this treatment, along with hand planting, drill seeding and herbicides, to rehabilitate burned areas and bring them towards a more resistant and resilient landscape.
