Mark your calendars for Sept. 26, the 21st annual National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day is the largest hands-on volunteer effort on public lands in Colorado and across the country. With 8.3 million acres of public lands in Colorado, the BLM relies on and celebrates the help of volunteers to accomplish many important projects. Each year, more than 4,000 volunteers contribute more than 200,000 hours to the BLM in Colorado!

On Aug. 29, the BLM is seeking volunteers to help protect unique rock art sites at the Canyon Pintado National Historic District from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will install decking on a foot bridge and assist with trail work. A BLM archaeologist will be on-hand to provide information about the area’s cultural resources. Contact Aaron Grimes at 970-878-3837 for more information about this event.

On National Public Lands Day, the BLM, the San Juan Mountains Association and the Southwest Cycling Association invite the public to help pick up trash at Phil’s World, a popular BLM mountain biking area in Cortez, Colo. For more information, contact Kathe Hayes at 970-385-1310.

As part of Grand County’s 21st annual Interagency National Public Lands Day Event, the BLM is hosting the seventh annual Colorado River Cleanup. The BLM invites volunteers to help restore about 18 miles of river between Pumphouse Recreation Site and Two Bridges by picking up trash and cleaning fire pits.

Also in coordination with Grand County’s Interagency National Public Lands Day, the BLM is seeking volunteers to help construct boundary fencing for Wolford Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area Improvements and Expansion Project. The newly designated open area was just approved this year. For more information on either Grand County event, contact John Monkouski at 970-724-3040.

In Eagle, the BLM invites volunteers to participate in a fence removal project at the Third Gulch Riparian Area from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Contact Kristy Wallner at 970-876-9023 for more information.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
