BLM celebrates National Public Lands Day with event to get people outdoors

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Volunteers together with the Bureau of Land Management plan to mark the 2013 National Public Lands Day by cleaning trash and debris from a popular target shooting range on Sept. 28.
The target shooting range at the end of 27 1/4 Road recently underwent extensive repairs and renovations. The BLM plans to orient visitors to the changes while removing debris and trash so visitors can enjoy a positive experience while using the shooting range.
The shooting range will be closed during the cleanup to ensure safety of volunteers.
“"This cleanup project is just another example of the many things our volunteers do,” said Fran Parker, volunteer and partnership coordinator for the BLM and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado. “Their involvement, both on National Public Lands Day and throughout the year, demonstrates how much they appreciate recreational opportunities on public lands.”
According to Parker, volunteer labor, valued at more than $300,000 in 2012, is critical to the BLM's role managing BLM public lands.
