ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is transitioning online recreation permits for the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness,  (PCVCW) to Recreation.gov. The move follows guidance outlined in Secretary’s  Order 3356, which directs agencies to provide improved customer service and recreation access.

Permits for Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) day use will transition from the current Arizona Recreation Online Permit System to Recreation.gov on June 1, 2020. As the online permits are issued three months in advance, applicants entering the online lottery from June 1-30 will be applying for hiking permits for the month of October. The lottery for the June applications will occur on July 1.

“More than 200,000 visitors apply for the available 3,650 online permits for The Wave and other local recreation permit areas each year,” said Acting Arizona Strip District Manager Brian Tritle. “Transitioning the permits to Recreation.gov will provide 24/7 customer service and improve website security, efficiency and reliability in booking reservations.”

Coyote Buttes South and Paria Canyon Overnight will continue to operate for the month of June on the current Arizona Recreation Online Permit System.

The BLM is working with federal, state and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and will use an approach that builds on the White House Guidelines for Opening Up America Again and is consistent with the state and local guidelines. For the safety of visitors and employees, the daily walk-in lottery for Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) and Coyote Buttes South remains temporarily suspended until further notice.

The BLM will notify the public when the Kanab Visitor Center reopens for in-person services including walk-in permits for Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) and Coyote Buttes South.
