BLM Advisory Council to meet in Lakeview, Oregon

LAKEVIEW, Ore. – The Bureau of Land Management today announced it will hold a meeting of the Southeast Oregon Resource Advisory Council. The public is welcome to attend the meeting, which will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 7-8, at the Lakeview Interagency Offices, 1301 S. G St., Lakeview, Ore., beginning at 8 a.m. each day.
Resource Advisory Councils provide advice and recommendations necessary for the BLM to consider resource and land management issues within the agency. BLM maintains 38 chartered advisory committees located in the West. Resource Advisory Committees are sounding boards for BLM initiatives, regulatory proposals and policy changes. Each citizen-based council consists of 10 to 15 members from diverse interests in local communities. They assist in the development of committee recommendations that address public land management issues. Resource councils are critical in assisting the BLM in continuing to be a good neighbor in the communities that the agency serves.
Tuesday, August 7, will consist of a field trip to view various Wilderness Study Areas and surrounding lands on BLM’s Lakeview District. Planned agenda items for the Wednesday meeting include possible recommendations for managing lands with wilderness characteristics in the Lakeview Resource Management Plan Amendment, sage-grouse management and programs, cross-boundary fuel breaks and access to the Owyhee Reservoir State Airport.
“The diversity of members of the Southeast Oregon RACs membership provides us with valuable feedback from a broad range of stakeholders, which is very helpful to the BLM in meeting its multiple use mission,” Burns District Manager Jeff Rose said. “These volunteers work very hard to familiarize themselves with our work and to find common ground and consensus on sensitive issues.”
A half-hour comment period, during which the public may address the RAC, will begin at noon Wednesday, Aug. 8. Depending on the number of people wishing to comment and time available, the amount of time for individual oral comments may be limited.
