Gateway Communities

Gateway Communities are an important component to the success of the Fort Ord National Monument.

Map of Fort Ord National Monument from the Proclamation

For several decades soldiers trained at Fort Ord. When the post closed in 1994, the economic implications to the local communities that surrounded Fort Ord were potentially devestating.

Now as a National Monument, it attracts hikers, mountain bikers, researchers, young school kids who can share and enjoy this land, bringing in new ideas and economic revitalization.

Bruce Burkhardt, host of This American Land takes us on a tour in Episode 202 (Fort Ord section starts at 09:03 minutes into the video tour).
